Genesis sees the inequities in Philadelphia’s school system and how they affect people throughout their lives. In her application, she wrote about moving from a wealthier district to one with fewer resources. She also wrote about the impact of seeing her mother and other family members wrestle with managing their money.
These observations helped forge the path Genesis sees for herself. “The mishandling of finances is an intergenerational problem that can only be solved if we inform more people about managing their finances,” Genesis wrote in her application. To become the financial consultant she wishes to be, she knew college was part of her plan, and she set out to find the resources that would help get her there.
Genesis accessed some of these through her high school, Murrell Dobbins Career and Technical Education High School. She joined the National Honor Society, eventually becoming president of Murrell Dobbins’ chapter. She tutored students at her school and was the valedictorian of her graduating class. Other resources were found outside school, including College Possible Philadelphia, where she benefited from their mentoring, SAT support, and college visits.
Genesis became the first in her family to attend college when she accepted an offer from La Salle’s Honors Program and became a member of the Class of 2023.
Genesis is most excited about joining a mentoring community that will help her not only academically, but professionally and personally—and is exclusively women!
